How old do you have to be to start taekwondo?

Children who are four years old can start taekwondo in our Little Ninjas program. Children ages six and up can start taekwondo in our juniors classes. Teens and adults ages 12 and up can start taekwondo in our adults classes.

What should I wear for my first class?

For your first trial workout you can wear sweatpants or shorts and a t-shirt. We take class barefoot, so no need to worry about socks or shoes. We do ask that your feet be clean prior to class. So, if you've been outside playing all day, give them a quick wash before heading to class.

Students should attend a minimum of 2 classes a week (3 is best). Setting a consistent schedule is important. Students that do not come to class consistently often feel out of place and then do not want to come to class. While students that do come on a consistent basis feel better and actually look forward to coming to class.

All of the instructors expect our students to give their best effort. Technique at the early stages of training is not as important as a positive attitude. If a student tries hard and has a good attitude, they will develop better technique over time because they are listening and learning.

How often should students come to class?

What do the instructors expect from the students?

Each stripe is earned in class for achieving a short term goal that breaks up the requirements for advancement from one belt to the next.  Students will have the opportunity to test for stripes during their class times throughout the testing cycle, and should have all their stripes by testing.  When a student has all their stripes, they are ready to test for their next belt.

Testing is a process where we evaluate the skills of the student to determine whether they are ready to progress to the next level of training. What is expected of students depends on the rank, age and physical ability of the student. Each student is encouraged to train consistently in order to learn their material and test when they are eligible, but testing is optional. Testings are held every two months. For information about testing fees click HERE.

It is mathematically possible to become a black belt within 3 years. However, it takes most people longer to attain that rank. A black belt is simply a master of the basics.  Although it is a new beginning to serious training, it is definitely not the end.

How do I find out what is happening at the school?

Every week, the school will email families to let them know the dates and times for upcoming events.  You can also check out our website at www.missmtkd.com or ‘like’ the McClellan's Taekwondo Academy (MTA) on Facebook . If you're in the school, the white board has all of the upcoming events and important announcements and they are announced at the end of each class.

What if my child uses taekwondo at home or school?

Tell us IMMEDIATELY. While we understand that students can be a little over anxious to share and show off, this can be dangerous. Please inform us as soon as possible so that we can take steps to correct the situation. We want to be part of your "team" in helping to raise your child to be the best they can be. If you are struggling with something at home like talking back, we are happy to address it with your child so they are aware that we are all on the same "team."

Are there any other Taekwondo America schools nearby?

YES! Taekwondo America is a large, national organization with member schools all across the United States and there are many Taekwondo America schools in the Columbus area. We have schools in Sunbury, Hilliard, Powell and Lewis Center. Best of all – we often get students and instructors from these schools to visit and train with us. Any McClellan's Taekwondo Academy student is encouraged to go and train at these fine schools! This is the advantage of being a part of a recognized and solid national organization!
